Telowie Forest is approx 2hrs North of Adelaide,
just inland from Pt Pirie. The track in the photos is the "Williams
Track". It is a track which is closed to the public but I got on
it by chance. I rang up the rangers at Mt Remarkable and I was told
that I was allowed on all tracks. So I bought my map and packed the
car and off I went.
After about 2 hrs of trying to find an entry
point to the tracks (the map was the latest released from the govt dated
1985!) we eventually got on this track. Finished up driving the whole
length before we came to a sign that we should not be on it. I would
have thought an obvious place for this sign would have been at the start
of the track!
Anyway, it was great driving. Some spots
we had to use Low Range 2 to get up and also come down so it was quite
a challenge. Obviously after we realised that we were not suppose
to be on the track, it was coming close to dusk so we setup camp (no fires
being in January) and slept on the ground. Too hot for a tent.
The bottom three photos are of a track we did behind Melrose in the Southern Flinders. Again we finished up on the wrong track thanks to the barman giving us wrong directions. We wanted to do the "Bridal Track" and asked the barman how to get onto it. We were told which road out of town to take and how far out (5kms). At exactly 5kms there was a track heading off to the right so we followed that for about 1.5hrs. The track suddenly finished at the yard you see in the photos. It was then we realised that we were on the wrong track. When we got back home we bought a map and the actual "Bridal Track" was actually 15km's out of town, not 5km's! Apologies to the farmer if he is reading this but having informed locals would be nice for the tourist! An excellent drive though and maybe the farmer should think of opening it up to the public.
Anyhow, hope the photos don't take too long to
download.
